INTRA AORTIC BALLOON PUMP (IABP)

Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP):

  • The intra-aortic balloon pump is a machine that helps the heart pump blood throughout the body.
  • The intra-aortic balloon pump is used when the heart cannot pump enough blood on its own. The device assists your heart in pumping blood; it does not replace your heart function.
  • It consists of two parts: a balloon inserted into the aorta, and a machine outside the body.
  •  The balloon is inserted in to descending aorta through the femoral artery in the leg and is connected to outside machine through tubing/catheter.
  • The intra-aortic balloon pump contains a small balloon that is inflated inside the aorta when the heart muscle relaxes. Before the heart muscle pumps, the balloon is deflated, helping blood flow from the heart.
  • The balloon works in conjunction with a machine outside the body to which the balloon is connected.

IABP Purpose/Application:

  •  The Intra-Aortic Balloon is a volume displacement device.
  •  Increases cardiac output, perfusion, pressure and volume to Coronary Arteries.
  •  Improves Renal function
  • Ventricular arrhythmias
  •  Cardiac surgery
  • IABP is used for stabilization of patients with acute myocardial infarction referred for urgent cardiac surgery.

MICROPROCESSOR BASED VENTILATOR

Microprocessor based Ventilator   Figure shows the block diagram of microprocessor controlled ventilator.(given below). It consists of two inter-connected systems: The Pneumatic flow system and an Electronic control system. The pneumatic flow system enables the flow of gas through the ventilator. Oxygen and medical grade air enter the ventilator at 3.5 bar (50 psi) pressure. These gasses enter the air/oxygen mixer where they combine and gasses then enter a large reservoir tank. An electronically controlled flow valve proportions the gas flow from the reservoir tank to the patient breathing circuit.   As the gasses leave the ventilator, they pass by an oxygen analyzer, a safety ambient air inlet valve and a back-up mechanical over pressure valve. The microprocessor controls each valve to deliver the desired inspiratory air and oxygen flows for mandatory and spontaneous ventilation. The electronic control system may use one or...

WHAT IS NABULIZER

Nebulizer:   Nebulizer is used when water or some type of medication suspended in the inspired air as an aerosol is to be given to the patient.   A nebulizer is a breathing machine used to treat respiratory illnesses, such as asthma. In this device, the water or medication is picked up by a high velocity jet of air/oxygen and is inhaled by the patient through nose or mouth. The nebulizer turns the air and oxygen into aerosol with medicine, and this is what patients will inhale to make them breathe easier, curing their asthma or respiratory problem.             Procedure/Operation: Open the nebulizer cup by turning the upper part counter-clockwise. Pour the quantity of drug as prescribed by the physician into the cup. Close the nebulizer by turning the upper part clockwise Connect the cup to the unit’s air outlet by means of the tube. Apply one of the required accessories: mo...

Anasthesia machine and it's block diagram.

Anaesthesia Machine: An anaesthesia machine is a device which is used to deliver variable gas mixture of anaesthetic gas and air/oxygen gases to the patient’s respiratory system.   Need Of Anaesthesia Machine: Surgical Operations normally carried out under some form of Anaesthesia. The functions of anaesthesia are:         1)      It ensures that the patient does not feel pain and minimizes patient discomfort.         2)      It provides the surgeon with favourable conditions for the work. Examples: Diethyl ether, Chloroform, Halothane, cyclopropane and Nitrous oxide. ·        Anaesthesia Machine block diagram:     Anaesthesia machine is consists of two subsystems : (i)         Gas supply system: Gases are provided to the anaesthesia machine...
